About the Museum:
The Maryland State Archives is the central repository for state government records of permanent value with a broad legal mandate to acquire and care for both public and private records relating to the history of Maryland from the earliest times of Lord Baltimore to the present. Note that not all records in the Guide are located in Annapolis. Over half the records listed in the Guide are stored in remote facilities including the Baltimore City Archives. Records stored in remote locations cannot be available on the day of your visit to Annapolis unless requested at least two work days in advance of your visit. You are assigned a desk number at the start of the day. A locker for that desk number is provided for your use throughout the day. Here you should store pens, books, bags, carrying cases, briefcases, and handbags. You may take only pencils, paper, and research materials into the Search Room. Computers, typewriters, tape recorders, and photographic equipment may be used with permission. If you are hoping to do geneology at the Maryland Archives, you may find it useful to read a general guide for conducting family research and to also be familiar with the types of records you can research. |
